Social Technology aimed at promoting the quality of teaching and learning, with special emphasis on literacy in Language and Mathematics (children aged 6 to 8 years old)

 Current Status

In 2025, we resumed the activities of the Synapse Teacher Training Course in 15 Brazilian municipalities across 6 states, offering classes from both the Basic and Advanced modules.

Structured into 8 modules, this free course uses the Synapse Methodology, which combines knowledge from the field of Neuroscience applied to learning with real-life experiences of public school teachers in their classrooms.

Historic

Synapse is a Social Technology in the field of basic education, created in 2010, aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning in Portuguese and Mathematics for students in the early years of Elementary School in Brazilian public schools.

Created in Santa Luzia do Itanhy, in the state of Sergipe, Brazil, this pedagogical methodology integrates knowledge from the field of Neuroscience applied to learning with the real-life experiences of public school teachers in their classrooms. Its goal is to contribute to the improvement of teaching quality and learning in early childhood education and literacy. Based on this, it adopted two important pillars: the contextualization of teaching to the students’ reality and planning based on learning objectives. In this way, it aims to guide and support teachers in the development of lesson plans and in the teaching of essential content, making it easier for students to assimilate concepts by associating them with elements from their daily lives. Over the next three years, Synapse tested and validated its methodology, applying the Social Technology in other municipalities of Sergipe. As a result of this work, Synapse currently offers educational resources such as: the Pedagogical Notebook and the Lesson Plan Notebook to support teachers; the Digital Platform, which contains content and activities for students to access via tablet; and the Pedagogical Support Materials (MAP), which are playful resources for teachers to use in the classroom. Synapse expanded its activities to several Brazilian states, reaching Maranhão in 2019 and later Ceará and Minas Gerais in 2021, benefiting a total of four states. Even amid the challenges of the pandemic in 2022, the project continued its teacher training initiatives and improved its educational materials, adapting them to the new needs of classrooms. In 2023, Synapse evolved into the creation of the SYNAPSE NETWORK, a nonprofit social organization aimed at ensuring the project’s sustainability and maturity. The organization promotes training courses and continuous pedagogical support for teachers in Early Childhood and Elementary Education, equipping professionals from various regions of Brazil who face similar challenges in their educational practices. In the same year, the Synapse Network trained 505 education professionals in 11 new municipalities across six states (SE, MA, PB, PA, CE, and MG), with notable implementations in the Amazon region, in Acará-PA, and in the backlands of Paraíba. Additionally, it began a partnership with BNDES through matchfunding with public-private companies, strengthening the project's sustainability. The updated version of the Pedagogical Notebook, with contributions from teachers across all regions, resulted in a nationally edited version and five regional editions, offering activities and guidelines tailored to each context. On November 8, 2023, the event “Abaixo-Não-Assinado” was held to launch the Synapse Network as a new institution dedicated to spreading the methodology and promoting quality education through teacher training, reinforcing the commitment to expanding the initiative’s impact in various regions of Brazil. In 2024, the Synapse Social Technology consolidated its role in Brazil by achieving a significant impact on public education. The initiative was present in 250 schools across 19 municipalities in 6 Brazilian states, providing training in the Synapse methodology to 646 teachers. This training led to direct improvements in teaching quality, benefiting approximately 15,500 public school students who gained access to innovative pedagogical practices developed by Synapse Network teachers. In addition, 8 new teacher-trainers were prepared to implement the Social Technology, expanding the methodology’s reach and dissemination. These results reinforce The Human Project’s commitment to promoting human development through quality education, establishing its role as a bridge for social transformation and the strengthening of pedagogical practices in Brazil.
