Iron-Deficiency Anemia Battle is a Social Technology dedicated to diagnosing and combating iron deficiency anemia in schools.

 Current Status

By 2025, the project in Santa Luzia do Itanhy, Sergipe, has as its main objective to continue the development of a specific device to optimize the identification of iron deficiency anemia. This initiative is a continuation of the hemoglobin triage campaign that was resumed in 2024 in schools in the region.

History

The Iron-Deficiency Anemia Battle is a social technology in the basic health area for the diagnosis and treatment of iron deficiency anemia in schools, seeking to contribute to the full development of children and adolescents. Considered the best nutritional resource in the world by the World Health Organization, it affects a quarter of the population and has consequences related to poor motor and mental performance. It is based on a portable, simple and low-cost device for measuring hemoglobin levels in blood and a sensitizing methodology for detection, treatment and adoption of healthier eating habits.

Since the beginning of the activities, the rates of iron deficiency anemia have been reduced from 32% to 5.8% among the students of the schools of Santa Luzia do Itanhy/SE. As of 2015, it will be scalable and will be reapplied in other locations, such as Boquim/SE and Borba/AM. The taxa were reduced from 25% to 4.8% and from 59% to 3.9%, respectively. With this result, Iron-Deficiency Anemia Battle won the Fundação Banco do Brasil de Tecnologias Sociais award in 2013, and in 2017 the experience of Axinim, in the municipality of Borba/AM, became the winner of the Edital “Mostra Brasil, aqui tem SUS”, in the Webdocs Award category Conasems. In 2023, the focus was to validate a mathematical model and an application in development with the Federal University of Juiz de Fora. Five schools in different districts were selected to collect 383 blood samples, resulting in 55 children diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia, with 33 beginning treatment. Furthermore, it was completed by printing the magazine "War in the Arterias: o Ataque dos Vermes" and created by the "Oficina Combate a Anemia Ferropriva", in partnership with the NHAM and the sick team of the Health Secretariat, aiming to raise awareness in the community in a playful way. In 2024, the TAG management system, with automatic generation of measures for alert cases, will be implemented in the ferritin taxa. We have a participatory construction of strategies to raise awareness and change eating and hygiene habits in children from 2 to 8 years old, following the best policies of the Ministry of Health. A current protocol was created for the community with two pilot plans, aiming at the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in diagnosed children, with significant results without controlling the prevalence of anemia among students in participating schools.
